Description
Do you know that…?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent type of arthritic diseases and the leading cause of pain and disability in most countries worldwide. It can affect people of all ages and its prevalence increases sharply in the elderly. The most common form of OA in Malaysia is knee OA. A study conducted by The Community Orientated Program for Control of Rheumatic Diseases (COPCORD) had shown that 9.3% of Malaysian adult complained of knee pain. With increasing age, the rate of complaints increased sharply to 23% for population over 55 years and 39% for population over 65 years.
What are the symptoms of OA?
- Loss of flexibility
- Joint stiffness
- Swelling
- Joint pain
- Bone spur
- Grating sensation
What is osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is caused by the breakdown of cartilage, which is the connective tissue that cushions the ends of bones in a joint.
What happens inside our joint?
Cartilage
breaks down and wears away ®
Rubbing of bones due to degradation of cartilage ® Rubbing causes pain, swelling and
loss of motion of the joint ®
Over time, the joint may lose its normal shape ® · Bone spurs may form OSTEOPHYTES ·Bits of bone or cartilage break off
& float inside the joint space causing MORE
PAIN ·Cysts, bony lumps and excess fluid may
develop which eventually cause SWELLING
What are the risk factors that might lead to OA?
- elderly people
- joint injuries
- bone deformities
- obesity
- stresses on joints from certain jobs and sports

· Provides
basic raw material needed to maintain a healthy cartilage.
· Stimulates
production of cartilage components.
· Relieves
joint pain associated with OA especially in the knee.
· Stabilizes
the synovial fluid by increasing the fluids around the joints.
· Prevents
further degeneration of cartilage especially in people with OA.
· Increase
joint space.
· Improves
mobility of arthritic joints.
|
· Exhibits
anti-inflammatory effect thus reducing the need of NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
· Decreases
the destruction of cartilage by inhibiting proteolytic enzymes and other
substances that contribute to the damage of cartilage matrix.
· Stimulate
the production of proteoglycans and hyaluronic acid to maintain a healthy
cartilage.
