Description
What are head lice?
Head lice infestations are a common problem in children, even in those who practise good hygiene and frequent washing. Head lice (Pediculus capitis) are small parasitic insects that live on the scalp and neck hairs of human host. Lice do not jump or fly, and feed on human blood. The infestation of head lice is called pediculosis. Head lice are not known to spread disease.
Head lice develop in three forms: nits, nymphs and adults.
Nits: Nits are head lice eggs. They are hard to see and are often mistaken for dandruff or droplets of hairspray. They are oval and usually yellow to white. Nits take about 1 week to hatch.
Nymphs: Nits hatch into nymphs. Nymphs are immature adult head lice. To live, nymphs must feed on blood.
Adults: An adult louse is about the size of sesame seed and has six legs. Adult can live up to 30 days on a person’s head. If a louse falls off a person, it dies within 2 days.
How head lice are transmitted?
Head lice are spread mainly through direct head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact. Other means of spreading is from the sharing of combs, hats, helmets, headphones, pillows or other personal items.
How is a head lice infestation diagnosed?
Head lice can be detected by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs, or adults. Use of a magnifying lens and a fine-toothed comb may be helpful to find live lice. If crawling lice are not seen, finding nits firmly attached within a 1/4 inch of base of the hair shafts strongly suggests, To find the eggs and nits, look for small white or yellowish-brown specks that are about the size of a poppy seed. To tell the difference between eggs and dandruff, try to dislodge them from the hair shaft. If they are not easily removed, they are probably eggs.

What are doctors and researchers saying about pesticide shampoos?
Doctors are concerned about toxins found in some over the counter and prescription shampoos. They are toxic, and could cause diseases that could severely harm a child.
Some shampoos contain Lindane:
Lindane is a proven carcinogenic [California listed] and is cited by the EPA as acutely toxic. It is a suspected endocrine disruptor. This means that it disrupts hormone levels which regulate growth and reproductive health. Endocrine disruptors pose specific problems for children, whose reproductive systems are still developing.
According to an article titled “Acute Lindane Poisoning in Three Children,” in The Journal of Emergency Medicine, Lindane is reported to cause damage to the central nervous system. The article says it inhibits the enzyme that allows neuro-transmissions between muscles.”
Lindane should not be used by pregnant women, nursing mothers, children less than 2 years old, people who have seizure disorders, or people who have certain skin diseases that may increase the likelihood that the product will be absorbed into their skin.
Lastly, Lindane is so toxic that it has been banned in 30 countries.
Some shampoos contain Permethrin:
“Permethrin is a suspected human carcinogen and neurotoxin which has been reported to cause temporary nervous disorders in the face and hands. It is also a suspected reproductive toxicant and endocrine toxicant.”
